Shortage of
Therapists in the GHA

The GHA’s shortage of speech and language therapists (SLTs) and occupational therapists (OTs) has significant implications for the development of children with autism and developmental delays in Gibraltar.

Many children and young people in Gibraltar have little or infrequent access to speech and language therapy.  Occupational therapy services are also hard to come by, leading to delays in assessments and interventions.

SLTs play a crucial role in supporting communication and language development. Without timely intervention, children with autism and developmental delays may struggle with expressive language, understanding instructions, and social communication. Occupational therapists address sensory and motor challenges, which can affect a child’s ability to engage in daily activities and learn effectively.

Poor speech development can have lasting effects on learning and academic achievement. Children who miss out on therapy may struggle with reading, writing, and social interactions.  Delayed access to OT services may hinder fine motor skills, self-care abilities, and overall independence.

Strain on Schools and Families:

Schools rely on therapists to support teachers and pupils. The lack of therapists affects schools’ ability to provide necessary support.

Families face additional stress when their child’s therapy needs are unmet, impacting their overall well-being. Communication difficulties can lead to frustration, anxiety, and isolation. SLTs play a role in addressing mental health needs related to communication challenges.  OTs also contribute to mental well-being by promoting independence and coping skills.
